Despite all the talk about the Tower being inescapable, Rinaye got out on the third day. It wasn't even that she tried to escape for three whole days and finally succeeded, she just didn't want to leave for three days. Those three days were Rinaye exploring her new home. Allison had included almost everything Rinaye could think of. She had instruments to play, books to read, and delicious food to eat thanks to the teleportation circle. But, as much as Rinaye liked her new home, she already had been stuck inside for the entirety of her life here, so she simply walked out.
Allison wasn't here today, she had other things to do. She was the only heir to another pretty big Duchy after all. So Rinaye just walked out the front door after getting ready. She had a little bag at her side that Allison enchanted along with a nice green dress that was just her style. Not elaborate at all, a simple pattern with simple fabric. She did tie a bow to keep her long hair in check though. Her boots looked like what combat boots would have been like in the Victorian ages. She rather liked them.
Rinaye exited the Tower and climbed down the stairs carved into the pillar. This was the forest. The place where the Duchy kept all of their precious and dangerous items. Rinaye counted as one now. The forest was lush and green, it reminded Rinaye of the redwood forests that Rinaye had visited in her past life. The trees were tall and the ground was covered in moss, grasses, and the tiniest bits of flowers covered the areas where the sun hit the floor. There wasn't a clear path out of the forest so Rinaye just started walking in one direction, marking the trees and making rock towers.
Eventually she made her way to the edge of the forest. She got lucky, the side that she popped out on was the closest to the road that led to the town. How was she this lucky? Probably plot armor. She managed to sneak out of the duchy without running into any guards or servants that worked for the Duchy. She climbed over the gate and started walking towards town.
Her first order of business was to sell the pearls that she had collected about two years ago from that overly ostentatious dress she was forced to wear on her first night in the main house. Rinaye didn't know if the pearls were real or fake, but she knew she could probably make a few coins off of them.
Stolen novel; please report.
When she arrived in town she found a map and started searching for shops that would buy the pearls. Thrift shops, jewelers, pawn shops, antique stores, whatever worked. Most places that she found were way too fancy and wouldn't buy something from a five year old girl. The nerve! Other shops were kind of sketchy, they looked like they would try to sell Rinaye instead of selling the pearls Rinaye gave them. She steered clear of those ones.
Rinaye found a shop that had a decent number of people in it, so it looked safe. Other kids were also selling some stuff there so Rinaye walked in. It was a rather humble shop but the items it had on display looked beautiful. There was a ruby necklace, one of those decorative eggs, a rather large number of pretty paintings, and a myriad of gems. Rinaye stepped in line and waited for her turn. She saw people sell wooden furniture, ores and minerals, clothing, fabric, almost anything you could think of. In a different line, people were buying stuff too. People bought jewelry, gems, metal, anything. It was like a general store.
Rinaye reached the end of the line in about ten minutes and glanced up at the old lady at the counter.
"Edna?" Rinaye asked in shock.
"Hello, child. I see you remember me." Edna answered without emotion.
"Yeah! Why are you here?" Rinaye questioned.
"I quit. Now, I'm working at my mother's shop." Edna said.
"Your mother's still alive?" Rinaye was shocked.
"Rinaye, I am only in my sixties. Now what do you have to sell." She answered.
"Oh, yeah! I have some pearls I stole from the mansion!" Rinaye told her.
"You really are shameless. Let me see them." Rinaye handed the pearls over to Edna over the counter and she pulled out the old tiny little magnified glass that looks like a fancy steampunk monocle. "Yup, these are genuine. I'll give you ten gold for the lot of them."
"Thank you, Edna!" Rinaye said cheerfully as she pocketed the money.
"Come back soon." Edna replied gesturing for Rinaye to leave.
"I will!" Rinaye shouted, exiting the store.
"How do you know that little girl, Edna?" A co-worker asked.
"Nothing special, but I imagine we'll be seeing a lot of her soon."
