I slammed my Ossemite onto the field, and in an instant, my Oreseod—the massive crystalline mouse monster—morphed into a jagged, lustrous behemoth! The ground erupted with shimmering spires as Ossemite let out a victorious yowl.

Sarah flinched back in her seat but quickly adjusted her glasses, regaining her composure.

"Wow, you really got me with that play," she said. "Bet your options must be narrowing down with that evolution." She eyed my hand carefully. "So, what's it going to be, Jake? Your move."

She had a point—my options were looking about as empty as my fridge on a Sunday night. My deck was out of cards, leaving me with just these in my hand:

  - Angrioon

  - Support | APEX Power-Up! [01]

And on my bench, I had:

  - Yunix

  - Leotyrex

  - Skyrawsoar

Yeah… this was gonna take some serious strategy. Or, you know, just some blind luck.

The real problem? Her elven warrior, Aegielf, was still standing strong. With its defensive abilities, I could be in serious trouble if I didn't find a way to bring it down fast.

She still had Prisora benched, and who knew what other tricks were hiding in that last handful of cards?

"Fine by me, Sarah," I said, glancing from Reinforced Crystal Curl to Catapult Cascade. That combo was a no-go—Aegielf's Glyph Barrage would just eat it up.

"Alright, let's go with Crystal Eruption."

Ossemite reared up as a storm of razor-sharp shards shot through the air like a meteor shower. They slammed into Aegielf with a deafening crack!, sending glimmering fragments flying in all directions.

  [Crystal Eruption] connects!

  - Ossemite's APEX-Power: 580 → 500

  - 80 APEX Damage → Aegielf!

  Aegielf's [Runic Shield] activates!

  - Aegielf's APEX-Power: 200

  - APEX Damage reduced by [20]

  - Aegielf's S-HP: 300 → 240.

"Not too shabby," Sarah noted, her breath held tight as the damage counter blinked to life. "But you know I've got my surprises." She tapped her fingers on the table, a cheeky grin sneaking onto her face. "Arcane Strike!"

Before I could even catch my breath, Aegielf struck back. Magical energy swirled into a shimmering blade and sliced down toward my Ossemite in a flash. The impact was swift and fierce, knocking several crystals clear off Ossemite's form. Luckily, that evolution had given me just enough grit to shake it off—though I'd be lying if I said it didn't sting a bit.

  Ossemite's S-HP: 730 → 670.

  Aegielf's APEX-Power: 200 → 180.

"Not bad," I replied, trying to mask the unease creeping up on me. My S-HP was still in good shape, but the tension in the air was practically crackling. I needed to take down Aegielf soon, or I'd risk losing my edge entirely.

But Crystal Eruption's effect had kicked in:

  - Aegielf takes 40 additional APEX-Damage for two turns.

Sarah knew this as she clutched her Alflin to her chest. She kept her eyes on Ossemite as I launched another attack. "Catapult Cascade. This is going to sting. Sorry."

The crystal monolith that smashed into Aegielf sent it crashing into a crater, and it staggered to its feet. The damage had been done, and even I felt a twinge of sympathy for the elven warrior.

  Aegielf's [Runic Shield] activates!

  - Aegielf's APEX-Power: 180

  - APEX Damage reduced by [10]

  - Aegielf's S-HP: 240 → 130.

"I forfeit." Sarah declared, casting a quick glance at her hand and notepad before locking eyes with me. Her fuzzy little elf buddy, Alflin, looked just as confused as I felt.

"Al?" it chimed in, its ears folded back in bewilderment.

I blinked, not quite processing her words at first. "Wait… what?"

Sarah let out a sigh. "Look, I could drag this out, but with Aegielf hanging on by a thread and Crystal Eruption's effect still active, my next turn is basically a slow-motion car crash."

She tapped her remaining cards against the table. "Even if I stall with Prisora, your Ossemite's got enough firepower to wipe the board. No sense delaying the inevitable."

Alflin looked up at her, still clearly puzzled. "Al?"

She gave the tiny elf a reassuring pat. "Yeah, yeah, I know, I know. I don't like it either, but sometimes you gotta call it."

I exhaled, the tension in my shoulders finally easing. It would have been awful if she had pushed toward a battle of attrition. Very glad she did not. "Well, I won't argue with that." I sat back, stretching my arms. "That was a solid match, though. You really had me sweating for a minute."

First, Sarah face soured. Maybe I had said something to annoy her. It me when warmed as Sarah grinned. "That's the goal, isn't it?" She started gathering her cards, reshuffling them with practiced ease. "Still, I can't believe I walked straight into that Crystal Eruption play. Should've seen that coming."

"Yeah, but you almost had me with Aegielf. If you'd kept it up just a little longer—" I whistled. "I'd have been in real trouble."

She paused, tilting her head. "True… but it's not like I can't get you next time." Her grin sharpened. "And trust me, Jake, there will be a next time."

I chuckled, starting to pack up my own deck. "I wouldn't expect anything less."

Sarah leaned forward, resting her chin on her hands. "You know, we should hit up the shop later—see if they've got any new boosters in stock. I could really use something to patch up my lineup."

Now that was an idea. "Sounds like a plan. But fair warning—if I pull something ridiculous, I'm absolutely rubbing it in your face."

Sarah rolled her eyes, but her laugh was light. "Yeah, yeah. Get your wins in while you can, champ."

Alflin pouted. "Al." It shot a glare at me, which triggered a growl from Spade.

"Calm down, buddy. The little guy's just a joker." I scooched down and rubbed my hands behind Spade's ears. The spectral dog wagged its tail in contentment. I kept it up, while the Alflin hopped up and down, with taunting gestures. The runt.

"Easy," she muttered, ruffling her own monster's tiny head. "We'll get him next time."

She turned to me, pointing at my Zelphone "Check out your rank." She sidled up next to me, ready to guide me through the official app. "Since you're fresh to the ranking system, you should've snagged some points for your victory."

I squinted at the screen, and there it was: my name, my rank, and my monumental Z-points.

Jake Garm, #199333, and a grand total of... 10 ZP. Wow, look out world—I'm a ZTCG superstar!

Sarah leaned over my shoulder, scanning my screen. The corner of her mouth twitched. "Ten whole ZP, huh? Better watch out, the pros are quaking in their boots."

I groaned, dramatically flopping back in my chair. "At this rate, I'll hit the top 100… in about a century."

She patted my shoulder like a coach giving a pep talk to the worst player on the team. "Hey, everyone starts somewhere. Besides, once you rack up a few more wins, you'll climb fast. You just gotta—" She gestured vaguely, searching for the right words. "—not lose so much."

  "Wow, incredible advice. Truly life-changing."

"I am known for my wisdom."

I rolled my eyes, but she wasn't wrong. The ranking system in Zeldritzon TCG was all about momentum—string together wins, earn more ZP, and climb the ladder. But if you hit a losing streak? Good luck digging yourself out of that hole.

Sarah's gaze flicked to her own screen, and I caught a glimpse of her rank—#19612, with a far more respectable ZP total. Yeah, no wonder she wasn't sweating it.

She caught me looking and smirked. "Don't feel too bad. It's not like I got here overnight."

"Right," I muttered, locking my phone. "So, you going to head out?"

Sarah shot me a pointed look that made me gulp. "You know what? I think I'll stick around for the rest of your matches." Raising her hand, she summoned the tournament attendant, who rushed over with clipboard in hand, ready to log our results.

"Are you sure that's wise?" I quipped, raising an eyebrow. "Don't you have better things to do than watch me stumble through my next few matches?"

Sarah waved a dismissive hand. "Please. Watching you flounder is way more entertaining than whatever else is happening in here. Plus, it'll give me a chance to scout the competition. You could seriously up your game with a little bit of observational advice."

I sighed, though a grin broke through. "Fine, but only if you promise to shout encouragement every time I draw a bad card."

"Or scold you," she shrugged. "Now let's see if you can turn those ten ZP into something epic."

With the attendant finished jotting down my match results, Sarah flipped through her cards, eyeing some of her favorites for a potential future configuration. Meanwhile, I could feel my heart racing, both from excitement and the slight dread of what the next match might bring.

The speaker crackled overhead as the tournament coordinator called out the next round of competitors. "All players, please prepare for your next matches! Next up, we have Jake Garm vs. Dan!"

"Correction, my guy: Dan 'Doom.' Never forget the 'Doom' in my name, or we'll have some serious problems," the guy said, pointing two thumbs downwards as he swaggered to the table.
