Chapter 10

The old man in front of them, now known as General Forsquave, began to laugh.

“I guess that is pretty fair, however I didn’t expect this.” The general says, referencing Loid.

“You, the genius who aced every university exam worldwide, the ultimate soldier, the best fighter and strategist ever seen in the army, is now traveling with a child? You must’ve gotten real soft in the year since you’ve left, or rather, escaped the army.” General Forsquave remarked.

The General wasn’t incorrect in his statement. A year ago, the thought of Jack looking out for anyone besides himself in a battlefield was abysmal. But Jack had changed from then.

“Can you blame me? In the army, everyday was hell, I’m glad I escaped and after this tournament, I’m not going back.” Jack responded.

General Forsquave, my supervisor in the army and the one who gave out orders and managed my group for project inhuman.

Loid watched the exchange in silence and finally decided to make a comment after Jack spoke.

“Mr Jack, do you know this man?” Loid asked with suspicion.

“Oh my apologies, I forgot to introduce myself, I am John Forsquave, I’m an old friend of Jack from the army.” The General said, never letting the smile on his face drop, not even a little.

Friend? That’s bull. He’s the one who put me and the other soldiers through all of our suffering. The same man who injected drugs inside our bodies, made us train till we fell unconscious, who made us fight against enemy countries against our will, and the same man who caused all of my comrades to fall ill from all his experiments and drop dead. Regardless, I refuse to make him influence my judgement.

  “Loid shoot him.”

Loid looked at Jack in surprise.

  “What?” Loid asks.

“I order you to shoot and kill that man.” Jack repeats in a monotone voice.

Loid formed a pistol in his left and placed his right hand under it for support. Then he aimed it at the General and shot with his hands slightly quivering.

The bullet blasted from the pistol and towards the General’s chest, but the bullet never made contact.

The General dodged the bullet, causing the bullet to only graze the man’s suit. The General looked at Jack and his smile grew even wider, one could describe this disturbing smile as somewhat devilish.

He can dodge bullets? The old man wasn’t that fast last time I saw him. In fact, I’ve never seen a person move that fast. So he must have a speed based ability. Damn it, we have to get out of here!

The general tried to grab Loid but Jack got the boy first and threw him over his shoulder. Then, he ran away from him at inhuman speeds. After only 12 seconds, they were back at the previous checkpoint, and Jack went in a different direction from the way he came.

Once Jack thought he was far enough away, he put Loid back down.

“That guy was dangerous, if you ever see him again run. Do you understand?” Jack said.

  “Okay.” Loid replied.

The old man having a speed based ability isn’t much of an issue because there must be a drawback of some sort. But why didn’t I notice that he was actually here, I scanned each and every face from the beginning of the tournament to now and I still only saw a glimpse of him. It was such a small glimpse I thought I could’ve mistaken him for someone else. That means that man must’ve been deliberately hiding from me in a blind spot. Damn it, I should’ve realized something was wrong when the heads I counted weren't equal to the faces.

Jack was thinking about this as he and Loid walked at a steady pace. Once a bit of time passed, Loid decided to confront Jack about what had happened.

“Hey um, Mr Jack? Is the thing the man said about you being in the army true?” Loid asked Jack shyly.

“Yes, it is. A year ago I was a soldier in the army, that man was in a higher rank than me and gave me and the other soldiers orders.” Jack responded calmly.

I predicted he would ask about this at some point.

“But you were fighting bad people right? You guys weren’t hurting anyone good guys right?” Loid asked nervously.

“All of the people we fought were really bad guys and we only fought them so we could protect our country. Luckily, we always won!” Jack said, showing the boy a wide grin.

That’s a complete and utter lie. If there was truly a good and bad side in our battles, we were anything but good. We ruthlessly killed anyone who opposed us, just as we were trained to do. Even the innocent weren’t safe from us as we raided towns and villages. I am no hero, I’m just a weapon that was used for war.
