Ch. 3 Chosen. Re-edited.

I began reading through my traits, starting with those labeled "Elven." The first one, Elven Swiftness, I already knew about—it multiplied agility by ten. Useful, sure, but it paled in comparison to what I discovered next.

  Elven Longevity

Elves are born nearly immortal, being part magic spirit, and live several millennia naturally. Nature itself provides vitality to Elves.

You receive a lifespan bonus of 10% when living around plant life.

My tiny jaw practically dropped. Ten percent?! That wasn’t some minor perk. For a race already considered nearly immortal, it was staggering. Living near plant life would extend my already ridiculous lifespan even further.

The other "Elven" traits were more straightforward but still impressive.

  Elven Spirit

  • +1 Intelligence and Wisdom per level.

  •
  • 10% efficiency bonus in Wind, Earth, and Light magic.

  •

  Elven Talent

  • Learn skills and abilities 10% faster.

  •

These bonuses were incredible. It became clear why Elves were often depicted as the epitome of arrogance in stories. With racial advantages like these, they had every right to feel superior. Immense lifespans, heightened learning, and innate magical prowess? I had to admit, I was lucky to be reborn as one.

I mentally dubbed these bonuses the Elf Series and double-checked for any hidden details or modifiers before moving on to the next trait.

  Soul Memory

Your mind and memories are written on your soul and can never be forgotten. Mental effects can affect/cause damage to your brain but not your consciousness.

  • 100% resistance to spirit control skills.

  •
  • 25% resistance to physical mind control.

  •
  • +15 Intelligence and Wisdom.

  •
  • +15% increase in Intelligence and Wisdom per level.

  •

Reading the description made my chest swell with pride. I had done this—I had transformed my soul into something more. Seeing the result written so definitively brought a strange satisfaction. Comparing Soul Memory to my other traits made it seem downright overpowered. The stat boosts alone were phenomenal, and the resistances would make it nearly impossible for anyone to manipulate me.

I savored the moment before turning my attention to the next trait.

  Simultaneous Thinking

Both your soul and brain can think in perfect synergy.

  • Can think about different topics simultaneously.

  •
  • Focused thought increases learning speed by 3x.

  •

I tried to whistle in amazement, but my baby mouth only managed to spray drool everywhere. Three times faster learning? That was absurd! Combined with Elven Talent’s 10% learning boost, my potential to absorb knowledge was astronomical.

And I was still a newborn.

I glanced around the room, my excitement dimming slightly. The interconnected teepee-like huts we called home didn’t exactly scream "place of learning." My parents had little more than a bed stuffed with leaves, a beaten wicker desk, and a single worn book. Would this world even have the resources I needed to take full advantage of my traits?

Sighing, I refocused on my status screen.

  Soul Vortex

The form of your soul naturally draws in mana and vitality.

  • Mana restores 25% faster after Level 1.

  •
  • +7 Wisdom, +13 Intelligence.

  •
  • +10% Vitality/Lifespan bonus.

  •

I stared at the words, feeling a mix of awe and trepidation. Another lifespan bonus? What was I supposed to do with all that time? There were no televisions here, no video games to binge. I’d struggled to maintain relationships on Earth—how would I handle a marriage that lasted thousands of years?

I shook the thought away. The future can wait. For now, I’ll focus on learning everything I can.

The mana regeneration bonus also caught my eye. It didn’t activate until Level 1, which raised questions. Why the delay? Was it a limitation of my infant body, or something else? I filed the question away for later. I didn’t even know how to use magic yet, so it wasn’t exactly urgent.

Finally, I turned to the trait I had been dreading.

  Chosen

Elves are descended from elementals given true life. Elves are part elemental and have always been close to their distant cousins. Before your birth, the elementals knew you. They have declared you their Chosen.

  • All elementals, contracted or not, will aid you.

  •
  • Enemy-contracted elementals will not harm you.

  •
  • Gain Skill: [Soul Speak].

  •

I let out a sigh of relief. This wasn’t the "Chosen One" nightmare I had feared. Instead of destiny throwing me into chaos, this trait seemed to offer protection and unique allies. Elementals were powerful beings in most stories—having them on my side could be a game-changer.

Curiosity prickled at the back of my mind as I brought up the description for [Soul Speak].

The moment I activated it, I felt an invisible wave spread outward, like a ripple in a pond. A new prompt appeared.

  Available Elementals in Range

  • Zotherg LVL ???

  •

Again? , I asked myself. How could I have another lifespan bonus? What would I do with all that Time? There no television or video games here. I couldn't even keep a girlfriend for more than a few years on earth much less a wife for thousands. I took a few minutes to calm down. I would have to deal with the future as it comes.

Perhaps I could use some of that time to master magic?, I thought. I reread the prompt and noticed the 25% mana regen bonus after level 1. Why after level one? I asked myself. I shrugged the unanswered question off. It wasn't like it mattered yet anyway. I didn't even know magic yet. There may not be anyone to teach me in my village anyway.
