The further he went, the more outlandish his progression became. Eventually, the free stat points he gained would outstrip the normal leveling rate of anyone else, save for true elites. By the time he reached his next racial evolution, who knew how many he would be getting per level?
Closing the sheet, without a need for those points yet, Jonathan turned to Arkanon.
“Any idea what we should do next? These undead are too weak to provide much anymore. Is there a dungeon in this realm that we could delve?”
Arkanon shrugged. “How would I know? You would need to ask Andrava for that.”
“Ah. How, though?” Jonathan asked. “Could you use your portal artifact to take us back to the capital?”
“I could try. It might be a bit difficult, given the mana density here, and the Tier of the device, but it’s worth a shot. We can’t exactly stay out here for years, grinding out levels.” The Uthraki gritted his teeth, and Jonathan felt massive quantities of mana and elemental power surging through the Uthraki. Slowly, a portal opened in the air, pushing against an invisible force for dominance. It snapped out to its full size a moment later, swirling rapidly. Arkanon’s face was set, as he maintained control over the portal.
“I don’t think this will hold more than one or two people of our level. You should go through and contact Andrava. I’ll open it again in five or ten minutes. I’ll get the others in the meanwhile.”
“Perhaps you should look for a replacement in the Trading Hub?” Jonathan asked. “It seems like this device of yours will be useless going past this realm.”
Arkanon nodded. “When you return, I’ll make a trip of my own. Now, hurry up. I can’t hold this for too long.”
Jonathan leaped through the portal without a moment’s notice, and landed in the middle of the palace complex. Or at least, he caught a glimpse of the ornately decorated rooms of the palace, before a surge of energy came crashing down upon him, trying to teleport him away. A wave of the Void pulsed from his body, and he destroyed the foreign energy trying to attack him. Only, it just kept coming.
The sound of metal clad feet beating against the floor came from a nearby corridor, and a group of guards stormed in, their weapons drawn. Fanning out in a semicircle around Jonathan, they started to charge their elemental potentices into their weapons, flames licking at the armaments.
“I’m here to see the Merchant Queen,” Jonathan explained. “She will want to meet with me.”
“Who are you, intruder? I’ve never seen you here before,” one of the guards declared.
“Tell your superiors that Jonathan Harlowe is here, and wants to meet with the Queen. I’ll wait here, if you want.”
The guard who had spoken gave a curt nod, and one of his underlings scurried off, down the hallways from which they had come. Notably, the remaining guards kept their weapons leveled.
“How exactly are you resisting the anti-teleportation arrays?” Another guard said, peering at Jonathan curiously.
He shrugged. “I have my secrets.”
“Fair enough. At least you’re strong enough to be worthy of meeting with the Queen, if she even confirms your presence here. You do realize that we will have to kill you if you’re an intruder here?”
Jonathan raised an eyebrow. “My, what polite guards you are. I’ve never had my life threatened with such grace before.”
The Uthraki gazed at him balefully, and didn’t speak again, simply watching and waiting. Jonathan crossed his arms, and leaned up against the wall, nonchalantly glancing at the guards every now and again. He would have mimed looking at an invisible watch, but none of the Uthraki would have known what he was doing.
A few minutes later, the original guard came running back, with the towering form of Sir Alonak behind him. The guards, the ones whose faces Jonathan could see, paled.
