Chapter 2

After all that running around and jumping, I ended up falling asleep in the cave with my egg siblings. I awoke to the light of a new morning shining in through the crack of the nest I had used to block the entrance to the cave. Yawning, I stretched my wings out as far as their stubby selves could go, and brought them down to find I had three new fuzzy balls stuck to me.

I cocked my head and inspected the three of them. Obviously, they were my siblings who had hatched and fell asleep beside me. Apparently birth is a hardy ordeal for everyone. Not sure how, but instinctively knew all 3 were my sisters. They all looked like me, except for the color under their wings.

Red, brown, and black; that was how they looked under the wings. Guess that'll be their names for now.

....Oh yeah; I need a name too. I lack a color besides yellow, and I'm sure as hell not calling myself "Yellow". Then again naming oneself sounds kinda dumb, so I guess I'll wait till someone does it for me.

Speaking of which, what was that strange blue screen from yesterday? If I recall correctly, I got an art stat and kicking proficiency. My memories may be more faded now, but I'm positive that didn't happen in my former life. In fact, if I recall correctly. . .

  "Profile." I mutter quietly.

....Why is the menu so strange? I can see the stats, but not the values? I guess that means I have them huh. In which case, can I gain more through my actions?

....Okay then. Ignoring the weirdest profile I have ever seen, technically the only one anyway, this means I'm in a different world then the one I used to be in. Also, apparently my race is "Chick". What the heck! I mean, a chick is merely the baby form of a bird right? So why am I being considered as a race in itself?

"What the heck is my race." I muttered to myself.

This blue screen popped in front of me immediately after my question. Oddly enough, it seemed to be answering my question in a manner befitting of a dictionary. Seeing a few possibilities here, so lets see if any apply here.

'Can you respond to questions I ask in my head?' I think toward the box.

'In other words, as long as one is intelligent and wise one can communicate with....you?'

If you spot this story on Amazon, know that it has been stolen. Report the violation.

'I was born sentient, so doesn't that counter what you just said? Also, why emotionless?'

'Same boat huh? Well, this should be an interesting adventure to say the least then. I'll call you "Blue" for now, nice to meet you."

'Great. One last question for you: why am I a chick?"

So it's a dog eat dog world. Makes sense completely; monsters diversify to populate the world as the ecosystem, while the sentient races magnify in order to overcome their obstacles. As a chick, I guess flying is a eventual given then as long as I do things to make my wings useful. Kinda makes me excited, I can feel the rush of heat through my body.

Oh wait, that's just me bleeding out slowly......wait what the hell is going on here.

I stand up quickly and find I have a few small wounds on my body. Let's see... yup I was correct; looks like my sisters have little spikes in their backs. I'm pretty sure that's a gender thing, which means the females seem more combat oriented than the males.

When I got up, I dislodged my sleeping siblings, who awoke with a start. They seemed pretty confused at first, but grew very still when their eyes locked on me. They bunched themselves together into a interesting ball of yellow feathers and stared at me.

  "Papa?" Black asked me hesitantly.

I shook my head, "Big brother."

They cocked their heads at me as one unit.

  "Onichan?" said Black.

  "Hermano?" said Brown.

  "Frere?" said Red.

....How do you get this wrong in 3 different languages? Annoyingly enough I realize they are merely squeaking and it's my brain that's translating their squeaks into words, but still how did all three of them manage a different language?

"Big brother." I said firmly as I gestured to myself. This time, the three of them gave me the avian equivalent of a smile and tackled me joyfully, crying out "Big Brother!". I ignored the spike pain and let them rub their heads into my feathers. Okay, I admit I was a little overcome by their cuteness. Sue me, I saved them and this is my reward. (The heck is sue?)

After letting them get off me, and showing them the spikes on their bodies and how they hurt me, I felt the rumbles in my stomach. I was rather hungry now that I was rested, and it seemed my sisters were as well. I walked over to the nest and pushed it out of the way with my head.

The sunlight shone down on us as we walked onto the stone plateau outside our cave. The beech was beautiful and sparkling, with no sign of the earlier massacre and feeding frenzy. Boy, those scavengers really do clean up well. That being said, I had no idea if any predators were lurking in the area still.

"How pretty." Red breathed out as she took in the sight. I had to agree with her, the beech was very beautiful now that it was clear of battle and gore. The sand was white and yellow in the morning sun as the deep blue ocean rained waves down upon it. The beech itself stretched a while until it hit a forest, which looked very green from our perspective.

"There must be food in the jungle." I mused to myself. The flurry of foot was the only warning I had to look behind me. My siblings were already running down the small stone path from out home to the forest as fast as their little legs could carry them. They must have been very hungry in hindsight. I cursed my lack of foresight as I chased after them. I didn't save them just to have them die the first day of their existence!
