Chapter 3

Edit: Oct. 27, 10:30 AM Level 9 > 14 with a few stats addition, adjusted some skills by raising them.

*Sigh*, this is gonna be routine for me, huh? Well, as one pointed out, despite the race's 1/4 EXP disadvantage, getting to 9 would be illogical. Also, there's still the bonus on my Stat gain and Skill experience. So yeah, I upped them a bit.

Zax after getting about 50 meters away from his original place near the gates, he found an appropriate prey. Wolves. A whole pack of wolves numbering to a dozen, to be precise. They were the strongest and most ferocious that can be found here.

Normally, even someone in the 10s would stay away from wolves, unless they were completely prepared and in a balanced party consisting no less than 5. So a newbie facing an entire group of them would normally be a no-brainer, it would be a massacre. But Zax definitely wasn't your average newbie, even just stat-twise.

No more than a second after he gave them a 'come hither' motion with his hand did the group charge. The three first ones to reach him lunged once they got within a few feet of him. His response was to quickly catch the ones on his left and right and slammed their heads onto the one in the middle, all three yelping as they dropped to the ground with a great amount of damage on their health, taking them down to 1/4 in total.

He threw a well-placed uppercut from another who jumped at him from the right, killing it with a critical hit. No sooner had his fist taken out that one did a fifth wolf try to chomp down on his left thigh, which he dodged with a sidestep. He awarded its attempt to take a bite out his limb with an overhead swing, his fist connecting with its forehead. The impact made it bounce off from the ground. Another one down.

The other five that lagged behind seemed to realize that this particular prey wouldn't be easy to take down, and stopped their rush. Instead they started to circle him. The three he turned to a wolf-head sandwich had recovered somewhat and joined their brethren's formation, looking more reluctant and cautious than the others after experiencing his strength first hand. But

Zax stood there, his face only letting a bit of excitement and amusement show. He was simply testing the results of his training. That was still nothing compared what he could once he went all out. If the man wanted to, he could be trying his strength and skill out on goblins, but he preferred to work his way up. More confident than impatient, he took the initiative and lunged at one of the wolves already injured, sending out a kick. Stiffening in shock, having more used for their prey to wait for them to make their move, his target had no chance of avoiding and hit on its side, sending it flying a few feet. Its health hit 0 immediately.

Similarly shocked, only when Zax had taken hold of another wolf and snapped its neck (similar to real-life, such a move was easily fatal) had the pack reacted, and even then they resorted to their original tactic, charging and trying to overwhelm their enemy with numbers and unrelenting offense.

They went down like flies. The first one was slammed between the fighter's fist, dead upon impact. Two others went down with a single spinning roundhouse, their necks turning violently to the side with an audible snap. Incidentally, those two were the ones also down to 1/4th. The four wolves left tried a pincer attack, one leaping at him from the front, another from behind, and two from each side. He ducked, and when their bodies passed over his head, caught two by their tails before swinging them towards the other two in mid-air. In simultaneous yelps they went soaring through the air.

Not slowing down for even a moment, Zax continued his momentum and charged at a pair who was trying to stand up their legs. He flipped forward and nearing a complete rotation he hit the wolves' muzzle with his heels. And then there were two. Two he gave no chance to try and retaliate or run, not that either action could succeed. Seemingly resigning themselves to their fates, they met him halfway. Their fangs and claws didn't even reach him since he crouched down and punched their bellies from below. The wolves went limp.

Zax slowly lowered the animals' bodies and set them on the ground. He then stood up and took a deep breath. Not once did he do so since he started the battle, that was how serious and focused he was despite this being a test-run.

He was now at Level 2, halfway to 3 too, and considering the race disadvantage, this was actually quite the achievement. It was also one of the reasons he picked the pack of wolves. Any lesser animal and by singles, and he'd have to go through a few dozen battles, if not over a hundred just to go a level higher. While not really caring about the level system, having a high one did have its benefits. Interactions with NPCs and users alike were supported by fear or respect from those with higher levels, and went better, than those with lower ones. Some quests had level requirements too, so it was a must to gain at least a decent one, in the eyes of other at least. Getting to 100 with his race was like reaching to the 300s for others.

And so the hunt went on. Pack upon pack, wolves went down by the dozen. Thankfully the area he chose was more secluded, and with just a few tweaks on the perception of other users, Zax's slaughter of the wolves went unnoticed.
