Jason takes his time looking around the event space. While he does know where the fight is, that can wait while he plans. With his need to take down the coyote first, he will need to figure out how to approach it unnoticed so as to take advantage of the assassin title.
On the surface, this was stupid easy to manage. The System basically left a giant path leading towards a number of obvious ambush locations to deal with both sides. Jason even believes that those locations are valid methods of completing the event. Except, of course, for the fact that the coyote would notice him.
There was just no way around that little fact, which completely ruined any normal attempts at stealth. Good thing Jason never planned to do things the normal way. Rather, instead of going up as the System seemed to plan for, he could go down.
The two sides weren’t just sitting there. Not that the System would have ever allowed that even if it knew what Jason had planned. After all, the only thing easier to handle than a pack of monsters, is a pack of monsters that don’t move from where they are standing. For Jason, though, the movement itself provided a way forward.
The snakes were at a disadvantage compared to the coyotes when it comes to detecting things and Jason planned to take advantage of that. It would be a simple matter of sneaking into the snake side of the things and hiding under something. In theory, the biggest problem would be choosing a spot that doesn’t already have a snake.
Reality, however, has something to say about this, mainly by asking how long Jason was prepared to wait. Sure, the lines moved, but the two bosses weren’t exactly on the front line. This meant Jason had to be a bit sneakier to make it work. Good thing the two lines seemed to be self correcting.
With all that in mind, Jason takes to the trees. After all, the System was so gracious to include those easy sneaking routes up there, be a shame not to use them. So, with some care, he scampers from one sturdy branch to another until he is over the center of the fight with a handful of gravel.
At this point, Jason begins to plague both sides. A pebble here and a pebble there soon breaks the balance. A lurking snake gets brained and a nearby coyote notices. On the other side of the fight, a coyote stumbles from a hit to the paw allowing a snake to land a venom filled bite.
A case of literary theft: this tale is not rightfully on Amazon; if you see it, report the violation.
Over and over, Jason pulls these simple tricks and the line of battle shifts. The snakes winning on one side, while the coyotes steamroll the other. This does take a day for battle to rotate ninety degrees. From there, it was a simple matter as the bosses moved with the lines.
All it took was to find the right location on the line of battle. What Jason found was a not quite cave. A small depression in the side of a hill that looks like someone started to dig it out but gave up. Jason didn’t give up.
Not that it was too hard, either. Superhuman strength meant superhuman digging ability and it wasn’t like Jason wanted to dig into the stone. He just intended to move the dirt from inside the depression to the outside. The biggest problem of it all was getting what sod had formed out in relatively large pieces so he could use it to disguise his hidey hole.
Then he waited as his plan came to fruition. Without his interference, the battle took a couple days to return to original orientation, but it was worth the wait. Jason had planned things right and while the trickster coyote wasn’t sleeping right on top of him, it had settled down nearby.
From there, it took about three quarters of another day for the coyote to poke around where he was. Not that Jason had the best view, what with being behind a wall of dirt and sod. Good thing the coyotes that he could see reacted to their boss just like a worker reacts when the manager is around.
Jason, knowing that his enemy was close once again used his pebbles to move things. The coyote closest to him kept on his best behavior, but a stone to the leg would make anyone yip. This, in turn, brought the trickster coyote even closer. However, in the normal swing of things, this wouldn’t have worked out for Jason.
The normal coyote would have warned the trickster from which direction the pebble came from. From there, most would think the trickster would approach from the opposite side and have figured out some fiddly way to make it seem like the pebble came from the other direction. Jason however knew otherwise. To arrive from the opposite side is the most obvious thing and not much of a trick to figuring that out.
No, Jason guessed, and was proven right that the trickster would come from the side. More specifically, it would use any convenient terrain to hide itself while approaching. As luck would have it, Jason was hiding within just such a piece of terrain.
That in mind, all it took was getting the pebble to bounce off something else so it appeared to be coming from a ninety-degree angle away from him. More than that, it had to be away from the side the trickster was arriving from. Not the easiest thing, but it paid off.
The trickster had known something wasn’t right, likely Jason’s scent had been spread all over the area or some such. Either way, the tricky trickster fell right into Jason’s trap. With the utmost caution, the trickster coyote snuck up to the small hill Jason was in and started to circle it, using the brush to hide. This delivered it right into Jason’s waiting arms.
