Chapter 3: Trials

Right as the goblin readied itself and finished its drooling spree. Two cards appeared before me, One showing a rabbit sprinting through the underbrush and the other showing a vicious bleeding gash on a deer, the temporary physical cards of the second trial: Dash and Rend. Rudimentary cards, found in many soul decks, but useful beyond compare for a melee fighter.

  DING!

  TEMPORARY CARDS ACQUIRED!

[Rend, Bronze Ranked] Coat the wielders weapon in a red aura, the next attack with this weapon will inflict the [Bleed] status, This ability stacks.

  COOLDOWN: 15 Seconds

[Dash, Bronze Ranked] Channels mana to generate a burst of speed in a direction of the users choice.

  COOLDOWN: 5 Seconds

They flew into my chest as my souldeck absorbed them, the card counter at the top of my view turned from 0 to 2/60. Memories of my deck from the past flittered in my mind, the power of 60 restoration, healing, and defense cards kepte and my allies safe from everything, everyone except that cursed harbinger Sanguinis who stole their Decks and Formation Cards.

A jolt seemed to run through me as the screech of the goblin forced me back to reality, it let out a guttural and creaky scream of rage as it began the run towards me., its rusted and jagged dagger seeming to gleam as it activated its one innate ability of Shiv Strike. Channeling mana to my Soul Deck, I activated the [Dash] Card to move around it, or at least, that was the plan.

“SHIT” A scream escaped my lips as the world flared with soul pain, a pain exactly the same as when i tried to awaken. I crumpled to the floor, my legs going numb from the mana backlash of a card failure.

The world turned red as the goblin screamed in glee, sinking its dagger into me over and over as my body ached and cried in an unfamiliar sensation of vulnerability.

  DING!

  CURSE OF SANGUINIS ACTIVATED! IDENTIFYING….

DEBUFF IDENTIFIES [The Curse Of Sanguinis]: The wielder has been cursed by a Higher Being Harbinger, The curse of the Card Thief Sanguinis has rendered your soul incompatible with cards! To put it simply: YOU’RE FUCKED! Cards will be unusable by wielder: Theo Hollowstep.

  SYSTEM NOTICE!

  UNFAIR CONDITION! RECTIFYING….

FAILURE… WIELDER WILL BE COMPENSATED: UNIQUE REWARD!

REWARD: Wielder will be granted [Mana Enhancement Bronze 1] [Affinity Token:Locked] [Soul Reinforcement Token:Locked] [Moderator Contact: One Time Use] [Skill Enhancement Bronze 1] [Racial Evolution Tab: Unlocked!] Good Luck.

The trial reset upon my death, A horrific experience i hadn’t even experienced by dying. The barrage and influx of messages overloaded my brain, making the world spin in an endless torrent of Dinging and skill notifications.

learning of the curses effect was devastating. “No Cards, No Power.” That was the motto of the old world, if you’re deck was empty you were no better than a cripple with barely a formation card. But these… Skills? They could be my path to power, an unknown affinity and a variety of “Balancing” Skills from the system

“KEAGHHH” A scream from the goblin as it began its charge once more, sprinting at me as fast as its little green legs could run.

“Fuck fuck fuck fuck!” I yelled while scrambling away, the pain still fresh on my senses from the last attempt.

I need a way to fight this thing without cards, magic beasts are too strong for a mundane weapon to cause damage too, you need a mana effect or a.. “Magic weapon!” the chain stored in the rune! That’s the answer! At the thought of my soul bound weapon, it sprung out of the rune on my arm and coiled itself around my arm, limp and heavy without my formation card controlling it.

“chained by fate” I intoned as i channeled mana through the chain to activate the blade and cause it to snake into the air, coiled to help fight as the goblin leaped once again. The sickly green aura covered the goblins blade as it activated [Shiv Strike] again, and it screamed in glee once more as if it could remember the previous success it had, well not again “you little…” I sent my chain striking forward, channeling extra mana into the chain to enhance its strength and speed.

A look of panic arose in the goblin as it saw the rippling gold aura of my mana coated chain pierce straight through him, the damage notification tried to distract me but i couldn’t risk the goblin recovering. I slammed my arm down as fast as i could and willed the chain to follow suite, restraining the goblin in the chains and bashing the ground with enough mana to make me dizzy from losing it.

What was supposed to happen was him being hit into the ground and a small cloud of dust to form due to the force of my limited mana, what i wasn’t expecting was the crater and eruption of dust to follow the slam. “What in the…” I could barely speak as my mana recovered at an exponential speed, the chaos of dust and the deep crater my attack caused revealed the bundle of goo that seemed to once be a goblin wrapped in flowing chains.

  DING!

FIRST KILL! You have successfully eliminated tutorial monster “Boblin The Original Goblin” you murderer, Boblin was just trying to help feed his 4 kids. After the death of his wife he had to turn to murder and combat to keep his family running, a sad, sad life that you ended.

Reward? The continuation to the second wave of your trial! Prepare for the poor goblins family to try to avenge their beloved dad, As the father of the goblin species, you can expect quite a bit of contestants from his descendants, each led by one of his children.

“Well damn, that’s just messed up.” i grumbled, remembering the death of my parents in the past timeline. Is the system mocking me?

  BEGIN WAVE 2: Yes/No?

I decided to leave the answer blank as i looked through my skill log and status sheet, aggressively shifted from the near empty list it was just minutes ago.

  INTERFACE: THEO HOLLOWSTEP

Race: Human(Evolution system unlocked, still unavailable as you don’t meet the conditions for any races)

  Mana: Gold

  Mana Affinity: ??????

  Formation card: Chained By Fate

Equipment: [Mana Blade Chain(Bound) Bronze Ranked] [Villagers outfit, Trash Ranked]

  Skills: 3

[Rune Etch, Bronze 1]: Allows the wielder to carve and activate runes into surfaces, success rate: Varies, mana cost: Varies. Known Runes: [Kaboom Rune] [Fire Rune] [Water Rune] [Earth Rune] [Wind Rune] (Gain more runes by leveling this skill or finding them in the world!)

[Mana Enhancement, Bronze 1]: The Enhancement of all your mana usage, your mana capacity is increased by 10N where N is skill level, you have increased mana efficiency, increased mana channeling, and an increase in all mana senses.

[Skill Enhancement, Bronze 1]: The Enhancement of all your skill usage, your skills have increased effectiveness equal to 2N% Where N is skill level.

“Goodness gracious…” I read through the skills, finally putting two and two together as to how my mana channeling was so much stronger than it should’ve been, my mana “itself” was significantly stronger than it should’ve been at my current state. A simple enhancement of my body would improve my capabilities several times over. I tried to channel some mana through my arms and felt the faint golden aura that surrounded them, it was as easy as breathing, with such little cost over time for such an enhancement. I punched the nearby colosseum wall as hard as i could, hoping to get a solid chunk out of it.

“CRACK” The noise of the wall crumbling surrounded the area as large cracks webbed around the impact site.

My hand lay undamaged despite the rubble, the skill really boosting my abilities far more than i expected. My mana pathways seemed to have been enhanced both internally and externally, making channeling into my weapons so very easy.

I really should test my other skill before i start the next trial though, a good wielder knows all of the tools at their disposal, even if it’s as something as enigmatic as a “rune”.

I pulled up the window to review the 4 basic elemental runes before trying the [Kaboom Rune], whatever it was it was likely going to be more advanced than the 4 origin elements. I began inscribing them one at a time, the runes being rudimentary and so easy a child could scribble them with the right knowledge. Each had a basic outline of the shown element, and when i imbued them with my mana they took on the hue associated with their mana. A blazing red formed within the [Fire Rune] as the air around it heated up around a churning ball of fire, a deep blue within the [Water Rune] as moisture accumulated into a sphere above it, A rough brown grumbled in the [Earth Rune] As pebbles collided into a orb atop it, and finally a beautiful green filled the [Wind Rune] as a continues burst of air shot from it. Basic elemental effects, but still a step above just enhancing my body with mana. “I’ll have to think of some nice ways to use these in the survival trial that occurs later, maybe even in the magic combat trial too.” I couldn’t stop thinking to myself the endless possibilities that rune etching could provide me.

“I could get used to this, but let’s not get too comfortable without understanding what the actual Fuck a “Kaboom Rune” is and why it sounds so fun” A glint of joy filled my eyes, Finally an attack ability, The first true attack ability i’ve ever had in either timeline, an explosion of some kind. The giddy thoughts couldn’t be held back as i tried to etch the rune that the interface had shown me, a simple design of 3 jagged lines surrounding a small flame rune. Turns out rune etching is very easy when you have fully control over a chain that can generate a fine blade tip, who would’ve thought. The final design came out exactly as i had hoped! “Now time for the testing phase of the skill…” I muttered while beginning to channel mana into the rune etched into the ground, a slight golden glow began to come from it, growing stronger and brighter as more mana entered it before the very air around it seemed to vibrate with an unstable mana signature.

  DING!

RUNE ETCHED! KABOOM RUNE: The most basic and easy of the Explosion Runes, it lacks any power amplifiers and is a 1:1 Ratio of mana invested to explosive force, extremely damaging to barriers but without sufficient mana it will only cause minor burns to enemies.

An attack rune… with the amount of mana i channeled into this thing it could cause some serious damage to whatever came out in the next trial. I… I can’t believe it, I have combat magic! Giddy with joy i hit the yes button on the second wave, hoping to see whatever poor creature would be the test subject of my first ever rune.

And then the chaos began, A goblin horde so massive that there shouldn’t be a single way to see the end of them.

But that’s when i heard the boss monster of the wave, Boblins Youngest Child, and the blazing red aura that enveloped Her and her troops.

This story originates from a different website. Ensure the author gets the support they deserve by reading it there.

  DING!

[The Founder Of The Blazing Berserkers Clan, Burnice]

“Father Slayer! I, Burnice, Youngest child of the Original Goblin, my father, Boblin, Have come to slay you as revenge. I bring with me my clan, the Blazing Berserkers!” She yelled with a barely intelligible voice, an imitation of the human tongue. Sparks of flame appeared around her massive body, erupting into an inferno that covered her in armor. Gauntlets of a burning red metal, shoulder pads still alive with flame, and a blazing set of armor made purely of an inferno. “Behold the fury of the Blazing Matriarch!” Her soldiers screamed in a raspy cacophony of voices.

And that was when the feces hit the wind affinity circulator.

“You have got to be kidding me!” I shouted, sending my chain out to attack as many goblins as i could, killing 3 with the first slash before they erupted into flames themselves. “A suicide ability? That’s just overkill.” The scorching flames that leapt from their corpses burned the air around me, choking me with the cinders. “Burnice quite likes seeing the struggle of the Father Slayer!” I heard a jovial laugh come from the Blazing Berserker Matriarch, more like Blazing Bitch if you asked me.

Channeling mana throughout my body, my strength was enhanced alongside all of my senses, sadly, this included enhancing the smell of burning goblin, the temporary shock of smelling that much death stunned me long enough for a goblin to sneak up on me.

Barely ducking under a burning goblins swing while sending my chain to stab 3 behind me, activating its blade and channeling extra mana into it with [Mana Enhancement] and swinging it around, cleaving a circle of carnage around me to give myself breathing room.

“Father Slayer! Your tricks will do nothing against my clan, The Blazing Berserkers have one specialty, Fighting Till the flames of the enemy have been extinguished!” Her rally seemed to embolden her army, even if it sounded like a toddler screaming to my ears. At least, until she activated a skill. “Are you kidding me today!” I groaned as a flaming banner formed in her hands, the ground turning into slag as she slammed the flame forged object into the colosseum floor.

A wave of heat exploded from it, and a small aura of ember surrounded her troops. “The Blazing Banner had been placed!” Her horde screamed at once as their coordination increased tenfold.

A commander ability, a fucking commander ability. Insanely useful if a wielder could get their hands on a card for it, but the biggest pain in the ass to fight against. Enhancing the wielders minions and allies, adding unique effects, and even bringing back the dead were the capabilities of some commander abilities. And Burnice just had to have one.

“Ok Theo, Assess the situation. That’s the way of the Hunter” Needing to remind myself of my childhood skills from before my original formation card dulled my survival instincts with its infinite regeneration. “The enemy has the fire affinity, and definitely some abilities tied to burning itself and enhancements, that’s not even to account for Burnice.”

Another goblin got too close and was bound to be used as a weapon, being slammed into goblin after burning goblin, but they just kept coming. My chain acting upon my mana, its blade whipping through 3, even 4 at a time while i laid my fists, feet, even head into my enemies. The arena swiftly becoming a pile of flaming corpses and ash. Each death strengthening the flames and abilities of the other goblins. An ever enhancing army as each one required more and more mana to kill, more force, more focus, increasing in strength till killing a single one required me to actively wield my chain as a weapon instead of a separate fighter. The flames of the army choked the air, a heat haze forming and blurring my eyes.

Then one got through, a burning sensation set into my side as the flaming cleaver but my flesh. Gosh it burnt! Turning around, I slammed a mana enhanced fist into its red skull and sent it crashing into the arena wall, causing spiderweb fractures near the impact site. The screech of the goblins seemed to fade as they watched their comrade slump onto the ground, twitching in its last moments before erupting into flames like his comrades. The inferno was starting to overwhelm my body, even with mana enhancement being pushed to its limits in my adolescent body.

I could feel my mana begin to run dry with the constant usage, even with [Mana Enhancement] reducing my mana cost to almost zero. A wave of dizziness hit me as i struggled to catch my breath, surrounded by the flames of burning corpses and the laughing Matriarch. “Shit, I forgot about-“ My sentence was cut short as Burnice slammed a blazing gauntlet into my side, sending me tumbling into a wall as my side was scorched by her mana flames.

“So, Father Slayer, was it worth it?” She scoffed at my limp body, “Was killing Boblin really worth all this pain?” she slowly approached, but i spotted something familiar right in front of her, something i put together before the second trial, my first combat rune, the [Kaboom Rune].

A weak voice called out from my lips, fueled only by my will to survive and the last of my mana enhancement “Oh abyss yeah it was worth it!” as her foot laid upon the maximum charged kaboom rune, surrounded by the 4 basic elemental runes and their elemental spheres that i made during practice.

BOOM! The explosion ignited in an instant, a furious detonation of raw, concentrated mana erupting from the [Kaboom Rune] like a miniature sun being born in the arena. The force shattered the air, sending a shockwave rippling outward, carrying embers and debris in its wake.

The four elemental runes—Fire, Water, Earth, and Air—reacted in a chaotic symphony. The Fire sphere blazed outwards, enhanced by the mana in the air as it ignited a gold tinged inferno into the goblin horde, the Water sphere doused the flames of the goblins, turning the arena into a steam filled haze, the Earth sphere erupted like a [Stone Shatter] Card was used, sending pebbles bursting through goblin skulls like a mana slug through butter, and finally the Wind rune, knocking back all of the nearby survivors, Runes truly are a work of art, i couldn’t help but think, my mana enhanced eyes jsut barely able to watch everything

Burnice barely had time to react before she was engulfed, her mocking expression twisting into one of shock as the blast consumed her. The sheer force of the detonation lifted her off her feet, sending her crashing into the opposite side of the arena like a ragdoll caught in a hurricane. The heat and pressure tore through her armor, and the impact cracked the wall behind her with a deafening CRACK.

The goblins watching from the sidelines shrieked, some diving away from the explosion, others too slow—caught in the shockwave and sent sprawling. The flames roared hungrily, consuming the lingering embers of the battlefield and momentarily drowning out all other sounds.

As the dust settled, I struggled to stay conscious, my vision swimming, my body screaming in protest. The mana backlash hit me like a hammer, draining what little I had left. But through the flickering flames, I could see her—the once-mighty Burnice, slumped against the wall, smoke rising from her charred form.

  Was she dead?

  I didn’t know.

But I did know one thing.

If she got up, I wouldn’t have enough strength for another explosion.

The world faded to black as my mind and body lost the fight against unconsciousness, a small smile creeping across my face before sleep overcame me.

  DING!

  ————————————————–——————

I awoke in the tutorial room, An array of notifications in front of me, and smile shone on my face when i read the first notification

  TRIAL 2: COMPLETED!

Let’s channel some mana into them, I thought before my hands lit aflame, the gauntlets turned into the living inferno they had been when burnice wielded them. “Holy Hellflames that’s awesome!” I shouted while trying to extinguish my arms from the heat that felt more comfortable than choking.

  DING!

“alright, alright, sorry for the wait system. I’ll look at your notifications now.” i could practically feel the impatience of the interface as it immediately sprung the rest of tis notifications on me.

  ACHIEVEMENT UNLOCKED: CARDLESS COMBATANT

  ACHIEVEMENT UNLOCKED: RUNE WARRIOR

  ACHIEVEMENT UNLOCKED-

The list went on and on, some for impressive achievements like completing the first trial without using a card, killing with non combat runes, and defeating a boss monster in one attack.

but most of the others were pretty useless, mostly for number of enemies killed in one hit, my [Kaboom Rune] really set off most of the achievements.

My favorite achievements were the ones that granted rewards though. I received skills, items, and even accessories through my actions.

SKILLS GAINED: [Spike Rune] [Remote Rune Activation] [Rune Script Reading]

ITEMS GAINED: [Cardless Carnage Ring] [Champions Amulet]

The new rune allowed a spike of mana to shoot from whenever it lay, but, using [Rune Script Reading] I discovered i could merge runes, and by adding an elemental rune to the [Spike Rune] caused the spike to be formed of whatever rune’s element was etched into it. This had amazing results for the earth rune but diminishing returns for eh other 3.

I was particularly intrigued by [Remote Rune Activation] It seemed to allow me to “Activate” a rune from afar but that didn’t make sense outside of my spike and kaboom runes. But i discovered something while trying to use the 4 basic runes with it.

“[Remote Rune Activation]” I said while focusing on the [Fire Rune] i inscribed on the ground, expecting nothing to occur. The flames seemed to sputter as my mana gathered around the rune before…

Fwoosh! The orb of fire shot into the sky, flying until i couldn’t make it out anymore. The rune crumbling away as its mana all fled into the orb.

“Wait a minute, Activating an elemental rune just… causes it to shoot?” I couldn’t help myself from laughing at the sheer ridiculousness of it, the 4 intrinsic elements of reality, and they just “shoot” when activated. Maybe all this time alone with new magic wasn’t the best for my social skills.

Setting the experimentation aside for the moment, i inspected my new items, basic items but useful given my… predicament. Wincing as i remembered that i was cursed to be incapable of wielding cards, the [Cardless Carnage Ring] Enhanced my physical capabilities while not using cards. and the [Champions Amulet] Increased my mana, stamina, and health regeneration by a small bit, A neat little reward for killing a boss in one hit.

I continued my experimentations, merging runes to see their effects, testing my physical skills with the new items, and even training my mana circulation until that dated DING! returned. once i had finally recovered my full strength to before The Blazing Bitch Burnice kicked my butt, it happened

  DING!

  TRIAL 3 IS READY! YES/NO

Mentally selecting yes, The third trial began. A wide cavern appearing, small mana gems glowing with the walls.

  TRIAL 3: [MAGICAL CARDS]

DEFEAT THE BEASTS USING TEMPORARY [MAGICAL] CARDS

  COMPLETION: DEFEAT THE BOSS

  FAILURE: RESET OF TRIAL

  BEGIN? YES/NO

“Yes.” The word left my lips flatly as I set to work, etching runes into the cavern walls without hesitation. A sharp flick of my wrist, a precise stroke of mana, over and over again. The entire space lit up with glowing symbols, a minefield of destruction waiting to be set off.

I already knew how this worked. The enemies in this trial were immune to physical damage, requiring mana-based attacks to even touch them. If I had to rely on those temporary magical cards, I’d be juggling cooldowns and mana costs like a fool. But that wasn’t my problem.

A snap of my fingers sent my runes into action.

The cavern erupted in controlled chaos. Orbs of fire burst against goblin bodies, sending up waves of heat. Shards of stone tore through them like jagged spears. Wind blades howled through the space, carving through the horde before they even had a chance to react.

The secret to this trial? Don’t let a single goblin leave this cavern.

My [Mana Blade Chain] lashed out behind me, carving fresh runes into the walls the moment an attack was expended. A constant cycle. One rune detonated, another took its place. A self-sustaining barrage that ensured I didn’t have to waste a single unnecessary thought on upkeep.

  Efficient. Simple. Tedious.

Minutes passed. The waves of goblins blurred together—spawning, charging, dying, repeating. Then, finally, the mana in the air shifted. A thick, oppressive wave of energy pressed against my skin, and the goblins stopped coming. A System notification let me know that it was finally the end of this tedious cycle.

[LEADER OF THE MANA GOBLINS, MURGLE]

A dense mist coiled through the cavern, the temperature dropping as a ghostly blue light pulsed at the far end. From the shadows, a hunched, half-formed goblin emerged, his body flickering in and out of existence. Hollow eyes locked onto me, his claws twitching as strands of mana pulled toward his form.

My runes flickered. Not from failure—something was draining their energy.

So that was his gimmick. A specter that absorbed pure mana, rendering standard magical attacks worthless. If I was using those temporary cards, I’d be in for a nightmare of a fight. But runes? Runes weren’t pure mana. Runes carried force, heat, movement.

I snapped my fingers. The first explosion rocked the cavern, fire swallowing the mist. Then came the stone spears, striking through his unstable form. Then the wind blades, slicing away the remnants.

Murgle let out a warped, garbled shriek, his body distorting as he tried to absorb energy that wasn’t there. He flickered violently, limbs spasming, form unraveling.

  One more snap.

The final barrage tore through him, and just like that, the fight was over. The system notification flickered into existence.

  DING!

I let out a breath, stretching out my fingers as I surveyed the cavern. My remaining runes still glowed faintly in the aftermath, the only remaining signs of the battle. “I mean i figured my rune strategy would make this fight easy…” a slight sigh escaped me, “But no fight should be that boring.”

  DING! CARD RECEIVED!

The essence of Murgle coalesced into a small card. A bronze card with a depiction of the goblins hands, grabbing the pure energy of mana

  [MANA GOBLINS GREED] Bronze Ranked

Effect: Wielder will send a spectral claw to grasp an enemies mana, damage dealt will be given to the wielder as equal portion mana.

  Cooldown: 10 Seconss

A useful card, i thought while pocketing it away into my inventory. “I hope Kael likes it.” whispering to no one, Memories of my little brother pestering me to learn about magic. The days he would spend chattering my ear off until i read him card guides.

Time didn’t pass like normal in the tutorial world, months could be minutes, and days could be seconds in the outside world. My family might be worried abo it how long it’s taking or they’ll be shocked that it’s done so fast. Time was never consistent between the realities of wielders, and each aspect of a wielder determined how intense the time dilation would be, my old word had me back in reality in 2 days of tutorial time and 10 minutes in real time, Kael had taken far longer. “I won’t let you get that formation this time little brother.” I swore to myself as i stepped into the 4th trial.

  TRIAL 4: [WILDERNESS SURVIVAL]

SURVIVE WITHIN THE TUTORIAL FOREST, HUNT MONSTERS AND DEFEAT THE OCCUPYING GOBLIN CLAN, THE 3rd CHILD OF BOBLIN

COMPLETION: DEFEAT THE BOSS, KILL 100 CARD BEASTS, KILL 50 CREATURES UNDETECTED

  FAILURE: RESET OF TRIAL

  BEGIN? YES/NO

“Yes” This would be the first new trial, one i had never experienced in the past timeline, and one with new variables as my new role as a combatant instead of a defender. Walking through through the verdant portal, My vision was surrounded by the forest i fought the dummy in, the area i first learned how to use my new formation card. Summoning my chain, its familiar bronze weight resting on my arm. It was time to finish this stupid enhanced trial, and finally get back to my family
