From the Rooftop, The Prince Brings a Vortex

Look, Andrew Hall lived in Plin City, he was used to weird things happening. Magical girls (and the singular magical boy the city had) fighting mystical creatures who needed to feed on the suffering, or whatever else it was (he’s not an expert, okay? He liked to stay as far away as possible), of the populace of Plin City? Regular Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday - scratch that, any day of week actually. Plus, on the bright side the attacks weren’t nearly as bad as they had been a decade ago. Those same protectors having started as kids, and had only gotten more kids over time? Unfortunate and weird, but not something anyone could do anything about.

A strange creature telling him that he was going to be one of the creatures that tormented the city? Way out of his comfort zone. Because honestly? WTF was he supposed to do in this situation?!!

As he stood on the roof of his school, he questioned everything he had done up until this point. School had just ended, so students were still all around the building. He felt bad, he knew from experience that getting caught up in an attack was not fun.

And look, he wasn’t didn’t want to be here either, but he was just so hungry, not in any way close to any hunger he’d ever felt, and something in the back of his head said that this was the only option.

So here he stood, on the roof of his school in a strange outfit that had magically appeared on him. A black trench coat with red trim covered a dark red and deep purple shirt that went all the way up his neck, he had a pair of black cargo pants and a pair of crimson combat boots with lavender laces and soles. His hair had gone from its usual black to shades of light purple and lavender, his ears were slightly pointed at the tips, his eyes went from brown to red, a pair of small horns sprouted from his head.

His hands had, probably useless, short, gray fingerless gloves and his face was hidden behind a gas mask, although without his mask on, his entire face just blurred and crackled with black energy (that was a fun few minutes). The weirdest thing was probably the crown though, it was black with red gems, and it floated somewhere between a centimeter and an inch above his head. He had no idea what to do with that.

He took in a deep breath before sighing. He stepped onto the edge of the roof and held out a hand, a few kids below took notice and pointed him out to their peers, black energy crackled and formed a small vortex in his palm. Some of the people started shouting below him. As he suddenly flipped his hand over, palm down, the vortex dropped to the concrete below.

As soon as the energy hit the ground, the sky went dark and cloudy, the air had a sudden tenseness (it felt like coming home after a stressful day when his blood sugar was crashing - relief), and some of the people dropped to the ground. Their eyes went pure black, sclera and all, the air around the downed was dark mist filled and crackled with that same energy, his energy. So that’s what it looked like when he unleashed his power, the attacking creatures always had unique effects. He knew what that felt like, he’d been in that position, he should feel worse about it, but the feeling of the hunger starting to ebb was so relieving, he didn’t even realize he had been shivering and shaking from the hunger until he stopped.

More people were screaming and attempting to flee. The adults were scrambling to get the students away. Those poor teachers, they didn’t get paid enough for this, although the parents weren’t getting paid at all for this.

As most of the people had fled to relative safety he dropped to the ground. A move that should have at least severely injured him only left a couple of cracks in the ground.

He only half heartedly tossed some of his energy towards the fleeing crowd, around seven more people were on the ground. Normally, the attacking creatures would take a very active role in tracking down escaping civilians, but he wasn’t really wanting to cause too much trouble. He sat on the nearest bench with no fallen people on it and let his hunger passively fade. It was just him and a few dozen fallen people. Well until-

“What’s the plot princeling? Never seen you here before. Although I don’t think I’ve seen a despairwalker just sit on a bench while in the middle of attacking, either. Or a child version, for that matter” the voice of a young woman called out. Remember the magical girls (and boy) he mentioned earlier? Yeah, guess they’re here to fight the attacking creature. Which is him right now. Joy, he’s so excited about this. And he’s very sarcastic, can’t forget that one.
