In an Instant

“The heart wants what it wants. There’s no logic to these things. You meet someone, and you fall in love, and that’s that.” – Woody Allen

  Antonio

It was time for him to go and pick Jane up from Mimi’s house, and he was driving a little faster than he should, but he didn’t care he missed her. He hoped she had enjoyed her time with her friend. Truth be told, he had enjoyed his unexpected guy time, and he wouldn’t mind doing it again.

He rounded the corner to Mimi’s street he parked and got out the car just as the front door opened and Jane came out bags in hand she waved off Mimi’s offer of help they hugged once more before Jane turned to him and her smile lit up her face and her eyes softened when she met his gaze, if his heart still beat it would have been pounding in his chest, she always looked even more beautiful each time he saw her he came over to her and took her bags.

“Hello my love” he murmured in her ear, giving her a gentle kiss before biting her bottom lip. She blushed, dropping her gaze she tucked a stray curl behind her ear before she looked back up at him.

“Hi, I missed you” she said, taking his free hand they headed to the car.

“ I missed you too” that seemed to make her even happier she practically skipped down the walkway. She let his hand go so he could put her stuff in the trunk she got in the car she was just buckling up when he got in.

“Are you hungry?” he asked her as they pulled off down the street. She shook her head.

“What about you?” she asked him he stopped at a red light and turned to look at Jane was he hungry, he was starving but not in the sense of hunger but of need of her for her to fill him up in the way only she could for him.

“ Yes” he told her they both held each other’s gaze.

“ When we get home, I want you to drink from me. Is that okay?” she asked he loved how he knew she wanted him to drink from her as much as he wanted to drink from her but she still asked him giving him a choice another thing he loved and respected about her.

“Yes, please” he didn’t use that word often, but with her, he would gladly say please over and over. She smiled shyly beside settling back into her seat. The anticipation of home buzzed in his veins, a welcome warmth after a long day. He eased his foot onto the gas pedal, the car responding with a gentle hum. The world outside blurred into a kaleidoscope of colors as he focused on the familiar route.

Suddenly, a jolt of adrenaline shot through him. A car, seemingly out of nowhere, slammed into his side, sending his vehicle spinning like a top. The world tilted and twisted, a chaotic ballet of metal and glass. The screech of tires and the shattering of windows filled the air. Jane’s terrified scream pierced through the chaos, a heart-wrenching cry that echoed in his ears. Finally, with a sickening thud, they came to a jarring halt, the aftermath of the collision, a stark contrast to the peaceful drive he had envisioned. His head throbbed. Fear spiked as he saw Jane, unconscious, a dark stain spreading across her temple. Panic set in as he tried to rouse her, but she was still. Instead of reaching for his phone, he pulled her out of the wreckage. He needed to get her somewhere safe, away from prying eyes. With a surge of adrenaline, he carefully pulled her out of the wreckage. With a determined stride, he lifted her and took off down the street toward his place. Once he got her inside, he laid her on the bed and began to check her injuries. Her head was bleeding, a dark stain spreading across her temple. Her arm was twisted at an unnatural angle, and her leg was swollen and bruised. She woke with a pain-filled moan, her eyes fluttering open. She moaned even louder in pain, her confusion and fear growing as she tried to piece together what had happened. He promised to make the pain go away as he bit into his wrist. He murmured soothing words as he cupped his wrist to her mouth for her to drink. As she drank, her body began to react. Her breathing slowed, and her eyes began to drift closed. He continued to hold her, his warmth and the healing power of his blood slowly mending her broken body. The pain began to subside, replaced by a sense of peace and tranquility. He held her until she drifted to sleep, her breathing soft and even. There was no sign of pain on her face, only a serene peace. He watched over her, He felt a strange sort of fear he had never felt before as he stared at her, seeing her fragility. It was a fear born of love and a deep, primal instinct to protect. He gently removed her shoes and clothing, careful not to disturb her. As he pulled the covers up over her, he slipped into the bed beside her, his warmth comforting her. As he let himself rest beside her, he felt a wave of relief wash over him. He was thankful that she was alive for him to do so. The sharp ring of the house phone pierced the quiet night, jolting him awake. He glanced at Jane, her breathing soft and steady in sleep. With a silent prayer, He slipped out of bed and padded across the floor, careful not to disturb her. He lifted the receiver, his voice hushed, “Hello?” he answered
