2: A Cruel World

A few days had passed. She had a routine, she would go to the waterfall and have a drink, she would then explore the area around it. Then once she was done, she would return to her tent to sleep.

After a few days of this she decided to change it up, she tried her best to pack up the tent she found, she then slowly brought it towards the waterfall. Eventually she got close to it, and decided a nearby clearing would be a good spot for it. Since she didn’t want people to take any of her items.

It helped her to go farther into the forest, and to explore more around the waterfall. She thought today was the day she’d find something interesting to explore, and with her sights held high she made her way through the dense brush to find some entertainment.

As she stepped through the brush her leg caught on some vines and she fell forward, right to the hard ground. Pain shot through her, as a tearful cry erupted from her throat. She picked herself up, and held her nose tightly, as she felt a warm liquid flowing from it. It hurt a lot, and she started to cry.

Pain was always a given since she realized she had a body, but she never really thought about how much it hurt. She stood up and headed back towards the waterfall, she then washed off her face until the blood stopped escaping her nose. As it cleared, the smell of iron was fresh in her nose. Making her wince due to the pain and unpleasant smell.

This time with more careful steps, she made her way towards the area she wanted to head. She carefully moved around the brush, so she didn’t hurt herself again. Sighing as she passed it she moved deep into the trees wanting to go farther than she did before. The thing about traversing forest is that everything looks similar, and you could easily get turned around, so that is why you want to make mental landmarks, for example if you saw a weird shaped rock, you could use that to find the right path. It's simple but effective, and has always helped people in this world as she watched them before.

Her travels went great, after a long walk which was about an hour. She found a road, or some sort of trail, that was rough and rugged. But also smooth and curtain parts making two parallel lines going in both directions. It was probably a carriage that had passed through, but she couldn't tell until she saw it.

Not really sure on how to proceed, she decided to mark the path she came from, with a stick in the ground, and she made it stand upright so she could see it from a distance. Then she marked the tree which led in the direction of the waterfall, just in case she forgot what side of the path she appeared from.

She smiled at her handy work, and was proud to hold such knowledge, and with a nod she turned and made her way down the trail towards… something.

It wasn’t long till she saw buildings, and not just buildings but people, actually people. She could hear their laughter from afar, and she watched as they worked on their farms and as the kids played. She smiled at it, but faltered to move forward. The problem was, she didn’t know how to speak properly yet. Not once in her whole life has she spoken, so she was rightfully nervous.

Sighing, she decided to not mess with society now, escally since she didn’t even know what kingdom she was in. nor did she know any of the customs, which could end up being a problem if she did something bad or say something that isn’t socially acceptable.

She turned her head, and made her way back down the road, it wasn’t long till she found her stick still proudly placed in the ground. She looked at it then the tree, and then the sky to judge the position of the sun. it seemed to be barely mid day, so she decided to wander down in the other direction. Maybe she could find something cool, and awe inspiring, she thought excitedly.

The more she walked the more she noticed how the trees started to grow in size, the farther she walked, the old the air became. She was intrigued by this, trees could grow to become huge if given enough care and attention, but to her it seemed like this forest took care of itself. Which she thought was funny, letting out a giggle.

As her adventure continued, she spotted people ahead, and coming in her direction. Scared, she quickly jumped and ducked behind some trees before they could spot her. They made their way towards the town, but they seemed different from the people living there.

They had armour on, and they had weapons as well, they seemed to be nervous or on edge, their carriage was small, but pretty. It had many colorful linings on it to show wealth. Its main color was a pristin white even though they were on a dirty path, it shined like it was recently washed. Whoever it must be of someone important, she mused, as she gazed into the window as it passed. But when she did, her eyes connected with a young boy's. They gazed at each other as the carriage passed, from the moment she saw him. His eyes show confusion, then fear.

Deciding it wasn’t a good idea to stick around she decided to make her way a bit deeper into the forest just in case they came looking for her. Though as she sat in a bush, no one appeared to come to take her, and after an hour she sat up, and left the area. Heading back up the roads, where they went. Soon when she reached her stick she had planted in the ground, she saw it had been trampled on. Probably by the carriage she thought, sighing, she turned to her left, and made her way back towards her tent.

An hour or two passed, but eventually the familiar rumble of water was heard, she quickly made her way towards it. The sight of the waterfall was always breathtaking, and it also helped her to expire for something greater.

She then was hit by an awful smell, she didn’t know where it was coming from. Until she smelled herself, her eyes widened at the discovery, she forgot all about personal hygiene. Since she used to be a spector, she never onced needed to indulge in such things. She remembers watching people take showers to wash themselves of dirt and grim, but she didn’t realize it also was to get rid of smell. She then felt her hair, and realized it was pretty knotted, and definitely needed a good clean. With a yawn she took off the robe she had been wearing for the last few days and hung it up on a tree branch to keep away from the ground.

Stolen from its rightful place, this narrative is not meant to be on Amazon; report any sightings.

She then stepped into the water, and cleaned herself. It felt funny at first feeling the cold water on her skin, but after a while she realized it felt good, and even refreshing. She smiled as she washed, the experience being quite pleasurable, and she would definitely do it again.

Though as she sat there for a bit letting the water soak on her, a noise hit her ear. She meant to turn around but before she could she felt a hand touch her head and a cold blade to her throat, a little squeal came from her throat, from terror as she realized what had happened.

“Don’t move or I'll slice your neck open.” a rough, and scratchy voice said to her as she stood still.

“Now be a good girl, and don’t move too much.” The man behind her laughed bitterly. But the last part of the man's sentence confused her, she didn’t understand, but before she could act she heard a loud thud, and the feeling of the knife against her throat loosen, and was completely removed, and fell to the water with a splash.

“Don’t even think about it,” another man said, soundly angry, and rather upset.

She turned around to see a slim, yet firm built man, he had brown spiky hair with red eyes that seemed to pierce, and to judge her with intensity. He wore clothes that have been through many battles, a simple white undershirt and a leather jacket, which was supposed to act as armor. On his belt lay a sword, it was sheathed in a leather sheath. His pants were ripped below the knees, having been ripped off at some point in his journey.

“Hey! what the fuck was that for!?” her attention was broken from him as another bigger man stood closer to her left, he was rubbing the back of his head, with a look of anger on it. He was a bigger man, and while also having the air of a noble around him. He had on clothes that one would say fancy, but cheap. Since he was on the bigger side, his shirt didn’t cover his stomach all the way, leaving some of his belly to the world.

“Are you really asking that you damned creep! It's a kid. And if you try anything funny ill knock your fucking teeth in." The slim man spat at the bigger man, while looking away from her to glare at him.

There seemed to be a staredown between the two, until the bigger one mumbled something, and wandered out of the water and back towards the trees. The slim man watched as he went until he disappeared into the foliage, once he was gone, he turned around and looked at her with a bit of worriedness, and awkwardness.

“Are you alright, did he hurt you?” The man crouched down to her height and examined her to see if he touched her at all, but to his surprise the girl walked forward, and grabbed at his face. He was confused for a second, then even more when he looked into her eyes. What he saw was interest, like how a scientist would if a new element was discovered.

Though to her, she still didn’t really understand how humans communicated to each other at all, she didn’t know how to talk, nor to show the right emotions, but before she even thought of those, his face seemed interesting to her so she put her small hands to his face and messed with it.

This undoubtedly made the man super uncomfortable, since now he had no idea what to do. The girl not only was massaging his face, but was still naked. Which didn’t help his case at all, so without much thinking he backed off away from the girl.

“Listen I'm flatter you like my face and all, but put some clothes on, or a creep like him might come back.” he said walking away, towards the trees. When he was almost to the forest edge he felt a force tackle him, confused he looked down to see the girl hugging his legs.

“He-Hey stop that, you little brat.” He tried to shake her off but she was stronger then she looked, sighing he shuffled over to where he saw her clothes, and dressed her. It made him seriously uncomfortable to do so, but the girl wouldn't do it herself, so he might as well.

“There, happy now. I don’t know what a kid like you is doing here all by yourself, but you seriously need to go back to your parents.” he said, pushing her away, while glaring at her.

She was happy to finally meet someone, but she also didn’t want to be lonely again. So she tackled his legs, to stop him from leaving. It shocked him to his core, but she thought it was funny. He then took her to her robes and dressed her, he seemed confused when there were only robes, and nothing else, but he didn’t question it.

She took an interest in him, because his eyes reflected complex emotions, that being turmoil, and self loathing. She hated seeing people like that, so she decided to cheer him up. Which would be, to be around him, even when he persisted for her to go back to her parents, which she didn’t have any so it just confused her slightly why her parents matter.

He started walking away, completely in the opposite direction of her tent, she wanted to grab her staff before she did anything. So she ran to him again, and pulled on his sleeves, to get his attention. He grumbled at first, but when he realized she was trying to bring him somewhere, he obliged.

“Better not waste my time, I have a job to do here, and it’s not watching a pip squeak.” he said annoyed, while she wandered forward with a smile on her face. He took notice, and seemed once again more confused than he was earlier.

Soon they reached a clearing with her stuff, and she quickly made her way into her tent, the slim man seemed to be somewhat worried by the fact she was living in a tent. But she didn’t really care.

She then came out with her staff at the ready, the man thought he was about to be attacked by her so he took a battle stance, as he put a hand on the pommel of his sword. Ready to attack if needed.

Confused, she looked at him, and then giggled. The man then raised an eyebrow, but before he could retort. She walked forward, and stood in front of him. She had an expecting look in her eyes, and that made him frown.

“Do you wanna come with me?…” The girl looked at him then tilted her head sideways like a dog not understanding a noise or command. But after a second, recognition appeared in her eyes, and then she nodded, Happily so.

“I'm sorry kid, but I can’t take you with me. It's just, you're a child and I'm not really a person to take care of kids. It doesn't come with the job.” he said to her, as he turned around, and started walking away. Not really getting his words, she followed.

After a moment the man realized she was still following him, he turned around, and looked at her.

“I told you already, you can’t come along, this job isn’t meant for kids.” he then put his left hand on her head, and pushed her slightly to indicate her to stay.

As she finally put together his words, she felt sadden. Her head dropped slightly, and tears started forming in her eyes. As she started to cry slightly, the man silently watched havoc unfold right in front of him. He quickly panicked and fumbled with his words.

“Wait wait, i didn’t mean you couldn't come i just meant you couldn't get in the way.” he said trying to make her stop crying, but he fell right into her trap, as she stopped crying and jumped for joy.

“Huh?” He looked at her confused, then annoyed. He realized what she did, as she giggled and smiled. “Oh, you little!?” he growled slightly as he realized what he just said.

“Listen, ok. I'll let you come with us alright. Just don’t get in the way, and you'll be fine.” he told her with an annoyed glare, but he was slightly interested.

She nodded, quickly, he sighed and started walking in the general direction towards where the other man went. Without much left to do she followed him, like a puppy to its mother, (or in this case to its father.)
