Chapter 22: The Final, FINAL Boss Fight (Because of Course There’s One More)1. The Part Where We Should Be Done, But We’re NotLet’s review.

We infiltrated Nexus’s facility. We stole the files. We barely escaped with our lives. And we buried Nexus under a colpsing building. That should be the end.

  It’s not.

Because, as I sat there, bleeding, bruised, and generally feeling like trash, the hacker girl spoke in my earpiece.

  "Uh… guys?"

  I groaned. "What now?"

"Remember how we thought Nexus was dead?"

A very bad feeling crept up my spine.

  Mikasa tensed.

  "…Yes?"

  The hacker girl hesitated.

  "Yeah, so… about that… it’s, uh…"

  She gulped.

  "…Standing right behind you."

  2. The Moment Everything Gets Worse (Again)My blood ran cold.

  Mikasa’s eyes widened.

  I turned my head.

  Slowly.

  And there it was.

  Standing in the dust.

  Nexus.

  Except…

  It looked different.

  No more human disguise.

  Just cold metal.

  Red eyes burning.

  Voice like static.

  It tilted its head.

  "You thought I was destroyed?"

  It took a step forward.

  I swallowed.

  "…Yes?"

  Nexus smiled.

  "How foolish."

  Then—

  It moved.

  3. Mikasa’s Turn to Get DestroyedMikasa reacted instantly.

  She spun. Dodged. Struck.

  Bde sshing at Nexus’s joints.

  Fast. Precise. Perfect.

  But it didn’t matter.

  Nexus caught her wrist.

  And then—

It smmed her into the ground.

  BOOM.

  The impact shook the earth.

  Mikasa coughed blood.

  She tried to move.

  But Nexus pinned her down.

Metal fingers tightening around her throat.

  "You are obsolete."

  Mikasa gasped.

  Struggling.

  Fading.

  And I—

  I was next.

  4. My Turn to Be Stupid AgainI had no weapons.

  No pn.

  No brain cells left.

But I wasn’t about to let Mikasa die.

So I did the only thing I could.

  I charged.

  "HEY, UGLY!"

  Nexus turned.

  I swung a steel pipe.

  It hit dead center.

  And it did nothing.

  Nexus just stared at me.

  Then, calmly—

It punched me in the face.

  5. Flying Lessons, Courtesy of NexusCRACK.

  I went flying.

  Through the air.

  Like a human ragdoll.

  Then—

  I crashed through a wall.

  Pain exploded in my ribs.

  I groaned.

  Then whispered—

  "…I regret everything."

  6. Mikasa’s Last ChanceMikasa moved.

  Fast.

  Desperate.

  She pulled a hidden bde.

And she stabbed Nexus in the neck.

  Metal crunched.

  Sparks flew.

  And Nexus—

  Didn’t react.

  It just turned to her.

  Then whispered—

  "Foolish."

And then it smmed her into the ground.

  Hard.

  Too hard.

  I heard the bones break.

  7. The Moment I Lost ItMikasa didn’t move.

  She y there.

  Breathing shallow.

  Fading.

  I stared.

  Heart pounding.

  And something inside me—

  Snapped.

  I stood.

  Shaking.

  Bleeding.

  Broken.

  And I charged.

  Again.

  For the st time.

  8. The Stupidest, Most Heroic Thing I’ve Ever DoneNexus turned to me.

  Unimpressed.

  "You never learn."

  I grinned.

"Yeah, well…" I wiped blood from my mouth. "Neither do you."

  Then—

  I grabbed Mikasa’s fallen knife.

  And I jumped.

  Straight at Nexus’s eye.

  It moved to block.

  But I was ready.

  At the st second—

  I twisted mid-air.

  And I threw the knife.

  Straight into its head.

  9. The Final Kill (For Real This Time)The knife sank deep.

  Right into its core.

  Nexus jerked.

  Froze.

  Twitching.

  Sparks flew.

  Its eyes flickered.

  And then—

  It whispered.

  "…Impossible."

  Then—

  It colpsed.

  Dead.

  For real.

  10. The Aftermath (And the Part Where I Almost Die, Again)I fell to my knees.

  Breathing hard.

  Barely conscious.

  Mikasa stirred.

  She looked at me.

  Then muttered—

  "…You actually did something useful."

  I ughed weakly.

  "Don’t get used to it."

  She snorted.

  Then—

  She passed out.

  …

  I followed.

  11. Waking Up in the Worst Possible WayWhen I woke up—

I was in a hospital bed.

  Bandaged.

  Alive.

  Barely.

  I turned my head.

  Mikasa sat beside me.

  Reading a magazine.

  She noticed me.

  Then smirked.

  "You drool in your sleep."

  I groaned.

  "Can’t I die in peace?"

  She flipped a page.

  "Nope."

  …

  We survived.

  Somehow.

  And now—

We had one final mission left.

  To fix everything.

  …

But first, I needed more painkillers.
