Prologue

Moon looked down at Tide. She was still warm from colliding with the earth, though much time had passed since then. Moon had been watching as earth developed waters and watched still as her heartstrings pulled on them. The oceans thought she was teasing, but she was desperate, a child thrust from the womb too soon. Missing the warmth and shelter.

  Space was cold.

The moon was jealous of the shore, so close to the ocean they kissed like it was breathing. She blew storms against the coastlines, throwing tantrums. She didn’t know how to tell the sea that she loved her yet.

Tide reached for the moon with salty fingers. She knew the moon was missing from her. She could feel the craters still, gut-wrenchingly hollow. She saw the matching craters reflected off the moon’s face at night. She cursed the stars. Why did they get to be so close to her?

Tide prayed to the moon at night, asking for nothing, thanking her for Everything. She made wishes on seashells. She kept track of Moon's phases, noting her ebbs and flows and mimicking her. Everything she did was for her. Tide hoped she knew that
