Chapter 8: The Cloud-Walking Technique; Yang Chan’s Surprise!

Yang Chan, backed by her brother Erlang Shen Yang Jian, had once been accepted as a named disciple by the goddess Nüwa due to her involvement in managing the troubles of the Weak Water. If not for unforeseen circumstances, she likely would never have come to Fangcun Mountain to seek Master Bodhi's teachings.

Clearly, Yang Jian must have learned something significant!

A flicker of light passed through Master Bodhi's eyes, but recalling the favor he owed Yang Jian, he shook his head. “Very well, since you are here, you may train under my guidance for a time.”

For him, accepting Yang Chan was not difficult, and since it posed no hindrance to the plans of the Buddhist sect, he didn’t mind repaying Yang Jian in this way.

Yang Chan nodded and performed a slight bow towards Master Bodhi, but then curiosity struck her, and she asked, “May I inquire, Master, why did that brother just now leave without attending the lecture? It seems the other disciples are all listening intently.”

Hearing this, a hint of pride sparkled in Master Bodhi's eyes. “That lecture would be of no use to him, so there was no need for him to attend!”

“No use to him, so he didn’t need to attend… It seems that brother is the most outstanding disciple of Fangcun Mountain,” Yang Chan thought to herself, intrigued by Xu Fang. The pride in Master Bodhi's eyes was unmistakable. What qualities did this brother possess that could earn such admiration from a quasi-saint master?

Master Bodhi paused for a moment before continuing, “At the third watch tonight, I will await you in the back hall to teach you a technique!”

The saying goes, "The law should not be transmitted to six ears." All the disciples present in the hall were filled with envy as they looked at Yang Chan.

What a remarkable background she has! Just upon arriving at Fangcun Mountain, she is to receive special teachings from the master. If only I could join her…

This was the shared sentiment of the disciples listening to the lecture.

In fact, if they knew that Master Bodhi had already given Xu Fang and Sun Wukong special teachings a year ago and was now doing so again, they would likely turn green with envy!

Yang Chan, however, gracefully expressed her gratitude. “Thank you, Master, for your generous teachings.”

The third watch arrived in the blink of an eye.

Xu Fang called on Sun Wukong and quietly made his way to the back hall. Inside Master Bodhi's chamber, the flickering candlelight indicated that he was awaiting their arrival.

To Xu Fang's surprise, Yang Chan was also present.

Xu Fang exchanged a glance with Sun Wukong, who nodded subtly and whispered, “Today, Master summoned her here to teach.”

  “Got it.”

Xu Fang nodded, offered a smile to Yang Chan, and then stepped forward with Sun Wukong to pay their respects. “We pay our respects to Master!”

“You have all arrived,” Master Bodhi said, looking at the three of them. “The reason I called you here is to impart to you the Cloud-Walking Technique. Yang Chan, if your brother has not taught you this method, you may learn it here.”

“Yes, thank you, Master,” Yang Chan replied, but just then, Sun Wukong stifled a laugh, covering his mouth.

Xu Fang felt a sense of foreboding. Sure enough, Sun Wukong whispered to Xu Fang, “Brother, it seems this sister of Yang Jian isn't that impressive. She doesn't even know how to walk on clouds! I can cover two to three miles in the time it takes to eat a meal…”

With that, Sun Wukong turned to Master Bodhi and said, “Master, I—”

Xu Fang quickly covered Sun Wukong's mouth, smiling at Master Bodhi. “Please, Master, impart the teachings. I will diligently practice and not bring discredit to your name.”

After saying this, Xu Fang shot a warning glare at Sun Wukong, silencing the monkey's urge to continue.

Master Bodhi regarded Xu Fang with a knowing look before saying, “I have three aspects of the Cloud-Walking Technique to impart to you: First, ‘treading clouds with footfalls, traveling from the Northern Sea to the Cangwu Mountains!’”

“Second, ‘flowing clouds transforming into rainbows, the body becoming a long rainbow, traveling tens of thousands of miles in an instant!’”

“Third, ‘the somersault cloud, this technique allows one to walk upon clouds; with a single leap, you can travel one hundred thousand and eight thousand miles!’”

Master Bodhi smiled at the three of them. “How do you choose?”

“Master, I wish to learn the somersault cloud!” Sun Wukong exclaimed, unable to contain his excitement.

As a monkey, even a Stone Monkey born from heaven, flipping head over heels was in his nature. This technique seemed tailor-made for him!

“Silence!” Master Bodhi scolded, glaring at Sun Wukong. “Do not be disrespectful; your senior brother and sister have yet to choose!”

“Yes,” Sun Wukong mumbled, his hopes dashed, turning his eager gaze towards Xu Fang.

Xu Fang smiled gently, fully aware of Sun Wukong's enthusiasm. However, he didn't feel particularly drawn to the somersault cloud.

After all, he wasn't a monkey; he couldn't afford to lose face by having to perform a somersault before flying!

Considering the remaining two techniques carefully, Xu Fang had no intention of yielding priority to Yang Chan simply because she was a woman. In this situation, he should take the lead!

With my superior talent, it was only right for me to choose first!

Why should Yang Chan have the first pick? Just because she is female? Don’t be ridiculous!

After pondering for a moment, Xu Fang spoke up, “Master, I wish to learn the flowing clouds transforming into rainbows technique!”

The treading clouds technique seemed graceful, but traveling from the Northern Sea to the Cangwu Mountains was not Xu Fang’s goal, and the speed of that technique was rather slow!

In contrast, the flowing clouds transforming into rainbows technique could cover tens of thousands of miles in an instant—it was undoubtedly one of Master Bodhi's best skills!

If I am to learn, I will learn the best!

“Good!” Master Bodhi clapped his hands in delight and then turned to Yang Chan. “Yang Chan, which technique do you wish to learn?”

Yang Chan glanced at Sun Wukong before replying cheerfully, “Master, I wish to learn the treading clouds technique.”

She could see how eager Sun Wukong was for the somersault cloud, so she certainly would not compete with him for it.

Sun Wukong, nearly drooling with anticipation, looked at Master Bodhi as soon as Yang Chan finished speaking.

Master Bodhi, fully aware of the thoughts of the three, smiled gently and, with a wave of his fingers, three beams of light instantly entered the spiritual platforms of the three.

The three immediately closed their eyes and began to cultivate.

Naturally, Xu Fang made the quickest progress among them. In just the time it took to burn an incense stick, he grasped the essence of the flowing clouds transforming into rainbows technique.

  “Ha—”

Xu Fang exhaled deeply, opening his eyes first. “Master, I have gained some insights into the flowing clouds transforming into rainbows technique and would like to attempt it.”

Master Bodhi nodded, flicking his fingers. A beam of spiritual light flashed, and the door of the room opened instantly.

He was already accustomed to Xu Fang's ability to comprehend techniques in such a short time.

However, Yang Chan stood there, mouth agape in astonishment.

In just the time it took to burn an incense stick, this senior brother had already mastered the basics?
