Death’s Tongue

What the hell was she up to?

The last thing Lynn expected when she entered Carveday was to find out that her sister was there. She herself had known about the place for a long time, never bothering to tell Ashley, because why would she? It’s not like her older sister ever bothered to ask what she had been up to. She was too busy either being an egotistical bitch or bitter about their dad.

Despite what Ashley did for a living, Lynn didn’t expect her to discover Carveday. At least not for a long time.

But here she was looking at her sister on one of the tvs at a bar there. She was at the Carnage Club.

“That Ashley woman sure is something,” The ghoul sitting next to Lynn commented, taking a sip of his drink soon after. “If I had known she would’ve been in this thing and how she fights, I probably would’ve put my money on her.”

Lynn frowned as her eyes stared at the TV. So she’s rather do this than just and fix things with their father? Make things better so that their Mom can have the family she always envisioned? Selfish as always.

Lynn growled before she finished her drink and getting up. She walked outside of the bar where her own motorcycle was waiting for her. She got on when she got a call on her phone. She took it out to see who it was.

  Mom.

  She picked up. “Hello?”

“Hey, Lynn!” Her mom, Misty, said on the other end. “Just checking in to see how your night is going.”

“It’s going fine, Mom,” Lynn replied. “Just took a trip back to that place we talked about a little bit.”

“Care to sure more details, honey?” Misty asked. “No need to be so secretive.” She chuckled.

Lynn smiled softly, shaking her head with a sigh. “We’ve been over this, Mom. I want to learn more about this place before I tell you guys about it. You know how Dad is. He’ll want to look into and make his own discovers, which would be more helpful if we learned some stuff about it first.”

This tale has been pilfered from Royal Road. If found on Amazon, kindly file a report.

“When you put it like that, I can’t say I disagree,” Misty laughed. “A very eager one that father of yours is. Did you happen to run into Ash again?”

Lynn was silent for a moment before answering, “Haven’t seen her since last night.”

“I’ve been trying to call her for the past hour and she hasn’t picked up,” Misty said. “Obviously she can take care of herself, but she always answers. I’m honestly a little worried. Do you think maybe you can see if you can find her and see if she’s alright?”

“I’ll find, Mom,” Lynn assured her. “I promise.”

“Thanks so much, Lynn,” Misty replied. “Make sure to tell her to call me. And stay safe yourself, alright?”

“Got it, Mom,” Lynn said. After saying goodbye to her mom, she put her phone away and drove off.

  ***

Ashley was having the time of her life. Which was no surprise because she always had the time of her life beating and reaping the freaks she came across.

The ones in this club were big and mean, but she breezed through most of them. Something was wrong, though. Despite being part of a pair, it felt more like a solo act.

Reese had been doing nothing but sitting, watching, and cheering the entire time. It felt once again the clown was somehow trying to make an ass out of her.

Ashley had cut the the head off a goblin, her latest victim before turning to the elf, “You plan on actually fighting?”

Reese laughed. “Why should I when you clearly don’t need my help?”

“That’s not the point,” Ashley said, putting her scythe over her shoulder. “We’re supposed to be partners, right? That means we work together.”

“But we are!” Reese grinned at her. Roper, who was watching from the crowd, just pinched his nose as he saw this.

“That’s not how it works,” Ashley replied, signing before smirking. “But I suppose I could take your cut of the prize.”

Reese gasped at that, practically jumping up. “You wouldn’t dare!”

“For you sitting on your sorry ass the whole time?” Ashley replied with a raised eyebrow. “You bet I would. You wanna know why? Because I’m carrying this pair. You wanna know why that’s the case? Because I’m better than you or anyone else in either Carveday or Grise Park can ever hope to be.”

Reese put her hands on her hips with a pout. “Is that so?”

“You’re damn right,” Ashley said. She heard something stomping behind her and turned away.

A bird creature was approaching her. The reaper woman smirked and grabbed Reese by her ear.

“You wanna prove you deserve your cut?” Ashley asked. She then threw Reese toward the bird. “Show me what you can do.”

Reese glared at her with a huff before turning away, whispering, “So dominant.” She giggled.

The ref then looked at the monster in front of her. It flew into the air and went straight down for her.

“It’s coming down fast!” Roper’s eyes were wide. “This can’t be good!”

Just seconds after he said that, the bird had landed down hard, with some of the watchers having gone up in the air a bit from the impact, including Roper.

“Hey!” Roper shouted, rubbing his head. “Watch the head! I use that to come up with my money making ideas!”

Ashley raised an eyebrow to the sight where the bird was now in place of Reese.

“Well she’s-“ Ashley would be cut off when she heard a giggle. She looked up. “…What the hell?!”

Reese was sticking on the roof as her giggling continued. She gave Ashley a playful smirk. “How’s that for what I can do?”

Her tongue came out of her mouth and went down, wrapping around the bird’s neck.

The bird flapped its wings, unable to get out of the tongue’s grip.

Soon…it stopped. Its eyes closing, and its life fading away.
