Lyra wants to be a Mage, one of those immortal, nigh godlike beings who watch over their flock from The Tower. Lyra wants to join the Mages in their glorious fight against the Realms beyond. Most of all though, Lyra wants to be free. Going to Waypoint University will hopefully teach her how to be all of those things and more, but she has to survive the experience first.
